ISLE OF THE DEATH

Heymann or Haymann ? cop. W. Jacobi 1920 or 1926

27 x 35 cms oil on wooden plate

The originary painting Isle of the Death is an artwork of Arnold Böcklin produced repeatedly for 5 times between 1880 and 1886. The present painting is an interpretation inspired by elements of the third and fifth version of Böcklins originals. A remarkably difference to Böcklins originals consist in the missing of the white woman´s barge and an ship-tunnel opening in the coastal rocks unter the left rock column of the island.

A ship-tunnel-inspiration during the 1920ies might refer to the then existing unique german ship tunnel at Weilburg Lahn-River-Valley constructed between 1844-47. Further known ship tunnels for example in the croatian islands Vis, Brac, Lustica, Dugi, Lastovo and Ploce in France (Brest, Bordeaux, La Rochelle-La Pallice, Lorient, Marseille, Saint Nazaire) and in Norway (Bergen, Trondheim) have been constructed later by german military forces during the second world war to hide submarines.

The image authors reference "cop. W. Jacobi" (1894-1972) could be related to the german artist Wolfgang Jacobi more known as music composer but also enthusiast of painting during his youth.
